Oakley Cycling

As a brand known for its innovative eyewear, Oakley didn’t start as you’d expect. It was founded by James Jannard in 1975 out of his garage with an initial investment of $300. But it didn’t start with eyewear at first as you might assume. James Jannard began by selling the “Oakley Grip” out of the back of his car at motocross events. These Oakley motorcycle grips were unlike any other grips available at the time, making them stand out and giving Oakley the spotlight. The material used in these grips is still used to this day in some of their current products. It is still used to make the earsocks on Oakley glasses, many of the nose pieces, and now the bands of their watches. From making grips, Oakley went on to produce number plates, gloves, grips, elbow guards, chin guards, and goggles for the BMX and motocross communities. In 1980, Jannard released the O-Frame goggles with the Oakley logo present on the strap. Throughout this time the Oakley brand started picking up steam and garnered increasing recognition and prominence throughout the sports industry. Soon enough they became a staple in every aspiring motocross racer’s gear. Oakley’s first sport-oriented sunglasses were the Factory Pilot Eyeshades, which resembled goggles, were released in 1984. They were followed closely by the Oakley Frogskin sunglasses, which featured a more casual style that was made in Japan. Oakley’s technological designs, fashion pieces, gear, and so much more have been developed with extensive athlete feedback and on the field testing.

Nowadays the Oakley cycling brand is a leader in sports and casual eyewear and has now ventured into the soft goods by producing Oakley bike apparel.
