One of the hardest working items in your cycling kit is your jersey. Cycling jerseys are technical pieces of apparel with specially designed fabrics and features, and a fit that should enhance your comfort and performance while riding. We carry all different types of cycling jerseys, from form-fitting road styles to looser fitting mountain-bike styles.
A cycling jersey is a very personal choice, but there are certain things to look for no matter what type of riding you do. You want a material that dries quickly, breathes well and feels good on your skin. Lighter weight technical materials are commonly used because they meet all of those demands. Your cotton T-shirt might be fine for everyday wear, but that type of fabric gets heavy and wet when you sweat—not what you want on a long, hot ride. Instead, look for moisture-wicking materials that won’t weigh you down. An alternative option to technical synthetics is Merino wool, which provides great moisture-wicking and has a soft, natural feel.
Most cycling jerseys have cycling-specific features such as pockets and zippers. For road riders who wear Lycra shorts and form-fitting jerseys, rear pockets are key for carrying food, tools and other ride essentials. You can typically choose from one, two or three rear pockets, so think about what you carry on a typical ride. Some jerseys are designed specifically for racing or performance riding, with a streamlined, minimalist feel, while others may be better for commuting, riding around town, or sipping coffee at the corner cafe.
Mountain bikers have their own specific needs in a jersey. For those who prefer baggy shorts and a hydration pack, rear pockets may not be required. On the other hand, you might want to look for zippered pockets to secure keys or other valuable items while bombing down a trail.
