Suspension Posts

When it comes to absorbing road or trail vibration, suspension seatposts can be a great (and affordable) component solution for you and your bike. And unlike more expensive suspension forks and shocks, suspension seatposts are easy to install and move from one bike to another, making them a great option for everything from hardtail mountain bikes and fat bikes, to gravel rigs, and even city bikes for commuters who face lots of broken or rough pavement on their way to and from work.

Suspension seatposts typically offer a modest amount of ride smoothing travel via an internal spring or some other bump absorbing system. A great example is the popular Cane Creek Thudbuster Seatpost, which delivers a full 3 inches (or about 75mm) of travel via a dual-stage elastomer shock. This post even comes with multiple elastomers of varying stiffness so that you can tune the ride to your weight and riding style.

Whichever suspension seatpost you choose, make sure it is the right diameter for your bike frame’s seat tube. The most common measures are 27.2mm, 30.9mm, and 31.6mm, and while you can use a shim to make a smaller diameter suspension seatpost work in a larger seat tube, you obviously can’t go the other way round. Make sure to double check.

And remember that suspension seatposts deliver more than just comfort. By taking some of the sting out of your ride, you’ll feel fresher longer, meaning a better chance of slaying that Strava KoM, reaching the finish line of an arduous gravel grinder race faster, or just getting to work on time.
