Bike theft occurs in just about every community on the planet. A bicycle is a lightweight expensive item that rolls on wheels. It almost seems like it was designed to be stolen. Since bikes are prone to disappearing if left unattended, many companies offer bike locks to keep your ride safe and secure when you are away. One of the most popular styles of bike locks are U-locks. U-locks are a favorite amongst cyclists because they are super strong and easy to use. Here at JensonUSA, we have a large selection of bicycle U-locks for you to choose from.
A U-lock is essentially a giant padlock. A rigid curved shackle attaches to a straight crossbar creating a “D” shape. Their simple design makes them a great balance of security, practicality and price. A U-lock achieves security comparable to a hardened chain at a fraction of the weight. Some U-locks even have a shackle with indexed ends. This means that both sides of the shackle must be cut for the lock to release the bike. The shackle won’t rotate away from the crossbar if only cut on one side.
Bicycle U-locks either function with a key or a combination code. Some people prefer using a key lock while others prefer a combo lock. A key lock is quick and easy to use, but you run the risk of losing the key or forgetting it at home. A combination lock typically takes longer to use but a disappearing key can never ruin your day. Most U-locks also have a bracket that you can use to attach the lock to your bike frame making storage and transportation easy.
