A U-lock is essentially a giant padlock. A rigid curved shackle attaches to a straight crossbar creating a “D” shape. Their simple design makes them a great balance of security, practicality and price. A U-lock achieves security comparable to a hardened chain at a fraction of the weight. Some U-locks even have a shackle with indexed ends. This means that both sides of the shackle must be cut for the lock to release the bike. The shackle won’t rotate away from the crossbar if only cut on one side.

Bicycle U-locks either function with a key or a combination code. Some people prefer using a key lock while others prefer a combo lock. A key lock is quick and easy to use, but you run the risk of losing the key or forgetting it at home. A combination lock typically takes longer to use but a disappearing key can never ruin your day.
