THIS HELMET CALLS FOR HELP

Specialized transformed the bicycle helmet into a live tracking device, crash detector, & safety beacon

This is ANGI from Specialized

RIDE TRACKER, CRASH DETECTOR, AND SAFETY BEACON

Helmets continue to get safer, lighter, and more comfortable, but the biggest advancement in helmet tech may be a tiny sensor from Specialized called ANGi (short for Angular and G-force indicator).

ANGi is a patented, helmet-mounted sensor that measures the forces transmitted to your helmet during a crash, as well as the harmful rotational forces that occur during crashes when your helmet doesn’t actually impact the ground. This small device connects via Bluetooth to your phone to provide ride tracking, crash detection, and emergency notification in the event of a wreck. Paired with the Specialized Ride app, you can ride with confidence knowing that ANGi has you covered before, during, and after your ride.

RIDE TRACKER:

ANGI-sub-1.jpg

ANGi lets your emergency contacts know you’re heading out for a ride and, if you choose, to follow your ride in real-time.

CRASH DETECTOR:

ANGI-sub-2.jpg

Wearing an ANGi-equipped helmet is like having a friend there making sure you’re okay.

SAFETY BEACON:

imagel74np.png

If you’re hurt, ANGi alerts your emergency contacts that you’ve crashed and sends them your location.

AND THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

It's simple. Just pair ANGi with a smartphone equipped with the Specialized Ride app. If ANGi detects a crash during a ride, it sends a countdown alert to your phone. If you're hurt and unable to stop the countdown, the app transmits a text alert and your most recently uploaded GPS coordinates to your emergency contacts.

GET ON THE RIDE

Beyond the safety functions of ANGi, the Specialized Ride app allows you to easily connect with your cycling community and find. It also records your ride and syncs the data seamlessly with your favorite apps like STRAVA so you can keep chasing your personal records.

INNOVATION BORN ON A RIDE

ANGi is the culmination of years of research and development, but it all started on a training ride that went wrong. One rider went to the hospital. Another rider asked himself what he could do to help make every trip a little bit safer. ANGi is the answer.

SAFETY FOR ALL

ANGi works with almost any cycling helmet, and most Specialized helmets from 2019 onward are ANGi-ready, meaning you can mount an ANGi on them. ANGi can also be attached to helmets from other brands that meet Specialized's installation criteria. Check the FAQs to get on your path to safer rides.

ACTIVATE ANGI

To activate an ANGi:

  1. Remove the protective battery tab in your ANGi by rotating and removing the battery cover. Then, remove the battery and peel off the protective film.
  2. Reinstall the battery and battery cover.
  3. Check that the Bluetooth® on your mobile device is turned on.
  4. Open the Ride app, go to the Gear tab, select Devices and tap the "+".
  5. When prompted, gently shake your helmet to wake up the sensor. The light will blink green when it's awake.
  6. If your ANGi firmware is out of date, you will be prompted to update it.
  7. Once ANGi is activated, enter your emergency contact's information.

Notes

  • There are two types of alerts you can send to emergency contacts – emergency alerts and ride alerts. Emergency alerts are triggered if ANGi measures forces transmitted to the helmet during an accident or, in the event you don't finish your ride in the allotted time you set for a Ride Time Alert (learn more here). Ride alerts are sent by email when you start and end a ride. Ride alert emails include a live tracking link of your location throughout your ride (updated once per minute).

USING ANGI

To use ANGi, first, check that the Bluetooth® on your mobile device is turned on.

  1. Go to the Ride tab and gently shake the helmet until the Bluetooth icon above the Start Ride button shows a green dot.
  2. Tap the Start Ride button. You must start a ride in the Ride app for ANGi to actively track your ride and report incidents to your emergency contacts.
  3. If you wish to use ANGi but don't want to record the ride, from the settings menu at the top of the Ride screen, you can turn Safety-only mode ON (Ride recording OFF on Android). With Safety-only mode on (ride recording OFF on Android), you must still tap the Start Ride button to activate ANGi for your ride.

Notes

  • The Ride app needs to be open to connect to ANGi, and it will run in the background for the duration of your ride. In addition, ANGi can connect mid-ride and does not need to be connected before your ride has started.
  • If ANGi continues to have trouble connecting or staying connected to the Ride App, replace the battery with an Energizer CR2032.

EMERGENCY ALERTS

If ANGi detects potentially dangerous forces associated with a head impact, an alarm will sound on your phone. If you don’t cancel the alarm within 15 seconds (this duration can be changed in the Settings tab, in 15-second increments up to 90 seconds), then your emergency contacts will be notified of the incident.

Note: On iOS, if your phone is on silent or vibrate-only, the ANGi alarm will not be audible; it will only vibrate. We recommend turning the sound on for your rides with ANGi. On Android, the alarm will be audible regardless of your phone mode.

RIDE ALERTS (LIVE TRACKING)

If Ride Alerts are turned ON for your emergency contacts, when you start and end a ride recording, your contacts will receive an email with a link to a map with your real-time location (updated once per minute). To enable Ride Alerts, go to Settings > Emergency Contacts, and select the contacts you'd like to notify before each ride. Toggle "Send ride alerts" ON.

Notes:

  • Typically Ride Alerts are received within one minute of the start and end of your ride, however, on rare occasions, the emails may not be received for up to an hour.
  • Ride Alert emails can wind up in the Spam folder. Remind your emergency contacts to check Spam if they think they are not receiving the emails.
  • In the event that part of your ride occurs offline, the app will store your offline location and will display it on the map once you're back online.

RIDE TIME ALERTS

If you plan on riding outside of cell service, you can set up a time-based alert. When you do so, if you haven’t completed your ride within the time frame you establish, your phone will send a notification to your contacts with your last uploaded location and the known points leading up to it. This will happen regardless of whether you have cell phone service or not.

To set a time-based alert:

  1. Go to the Ride tab and tap the settings button at the top of the screen.
  2. Toggle ON the "Ride time alert" option and specify the duration of your ride.

Note: We recommend setting your timer for longer than you expect to be out, just in case you take a detour.

SAFETY-ONLY/RIDE RECORDING OFF

If you wish to use ANGi but don't want to record your ride, from the settings menu at the top of the Ride screen, turn Safety-only mode ON (Ride recording OFF on Android). The app will only use your GPS data to generate a route map sent to your emergency contacts for live tracking, in the event of a crash, or if your Ride Time Alert expires (learn more here). You must still tap the Start Ride button to activate ANGi for your ride.

MANAGE YOUR EMERGENCY CONTACTS

To add emergency contacts on the Ride app:

  1. Go to the Settings tab and select Emergency contacts under ANGi.
  2. Tap the "+," then enter the contact details, and choose alert preferences.
  3. Select Save Contact.

To manage your emergency contacts on the Ride app:

  1. Go to the Settings tab and select Emergency contacts under ANGi.
  2. Tap on the name of the emergency contact you wish to edit, make the changes, and select Save Contact.

Emergency alerts are triggered if ANGi measures dangerous forces transmitted to the helmet during an accident or if you don't finish your ride in the allotted time you set for a Ride Time Alert (learn more here). Ride alerts are sent by email when you start and end a ride. Ride alert emails include a live tracking link of your location throughout your ride.

Emergency contacts can also be managed at ride.specialized.com:

  1. Sign in to with your Specialized account (the same one you use for the Ride app)
  2. Click the avatar icon in the upper right corner and select My Account.
  3. Go to Contacts.

FAQs

Why is the Ride app telling me to update my ANGi firmware?

We are constantly making updates to provide you with the best ANGi experience and ensure the app and ANGi work together. To utilize these improvements, we require that your ANGi have the latest firmware. You will not be able to ride with ANGi until its firmware is up-to-date.

What does ANGi stand for?

Angular and G-Force indicator.

What does ANGi measure?

ANGi is a patented device that contains sensors designed to measure the linear and rotational forces transmitted to the helmet during an accident.

What types of sensors are in ANGi? Does it include a GPS receiver?

ANGi contains an accelerometer and a gyro for measurement of linear and rotational forces. GPS functionality is provided via the Specialized Ride App that your ANGi sensor is connected to.

How does ANGi work?

If the ANGi sensor detects potentially dangerous forces transmitted to the helmet that could indicate a crash during a Ride App ride recording, it will tell the Ride app to sound an alarm and start a countdown. If you’re okay, you can just cancel the countdown and keep riding. If you’re injured and unable to cancel the countdown, the Ride App will send a text alert to your emergency contacts telling them you may have been in an accident.
In addition to notifying your contacts that you may have crashed, ANGi and the Ride App will also send your location via GPS coordinates to the contacts you’ve marked to receive Emergency Alerts in the Ride App.

If I haven’t been hurt in a crash, how much time do I have to cancel the countdown on my phone so my emergency contacts don’t get unnecessary alerts?

It’s up to you. When you connect ANGi to your phone and configure your settings in the Specialized Ride app, you’ll be able to determine the length of your countdown. More specifically, you can set how long you have between the moment ANGi detects a possible crash and the moment the Ride app sends an alert to your emergency contacts. The default countdown setting is 15 seconds. You can adjust your countdown (in 15-second increments) to last anywhere between 15 and 90 seconds.

Can I attach the ANGi sensor to an older Specialized helmet or a helmet from another brand?

ANGi sensors can be used with any cycling helmet that meets the installation criteria. Refer to this user manual to mount your ANGi sensor to an older Specialized helmet model, or a non-Specialized helmet to ensure correct installation.

Can I remove the ANGi sensor?

The sensor is attached by adhesive and can be removed, although we don’t recommend removing it. Once removed, the unit cannot be reattached.

Which devices are compatible with ANGi?

The Ride app is available for iPhones with iOS 13 or later and Android 7 or later.

How does ANGi “talk” with my phone?

ANGi connects to your phone through the Ride App via Bluetooth® Low Energy. The sensor will maintain a constant connection to the phone as long as it remains within range of the phone and as long as the Ride app is running.

If I get a new phone, do I have to re-register my ANGi sensor?

ANGis no longer require registration. To use your ANGi from your new phone, simply download the Ride app and log in to your account.

Can I run other Bluetooth® devices while using ANGi?

Yes. ANGi should not conflict with other Bluetooth® connections such as audio, heart rate monitors, or power meters.

How long does the battery last?

Under normal conditions and regular riding, the battery should last six months. To extend your ANGi device's battery life, follow these pro tips:

  • Connect ANGi every time you ride. This may sound counterintuitive, but riding without connecting ANGi will drain your battery. This is because when ANGi detects movement, it tries to wake up continuously, but if it never successfully connects causing rapid battery draw down. If you don't plan on recording your ride, but still want ANGi to be on, use Safety-only mode.
  • Remove the battery when you're traveling. Say your helmet is in the trunk of your car or in your luggage — remove the ANGi battery until you're ready to ride again. Whenever ANGi senses motion, it will try to connect. Keep ANGi asleep by removing its battery.

Which battery does the ANGi sensor use?

ANGi uses a commonly available CR2032 battery.

Is ANGi waterproof?

Yes, ANGi is waterproof rated at IPx7. In other words, the sensor is waterproof when immersed for 30 minutes to a depth of 1 meter.

Can I record my ride within the Specialized Ride App and have it link up to STRAVA®?

Yes, you can link your STRAVA® account to the Ride App. Once you’ve done so, simply record your ride in the Ride App and it will automatically post to STRAVA® when you’re done riding.

Should I be concerned about radiation?

ANGi uses Bluetooth® Low-Energy. It is rated safe for its use and location by passing all radiation tests. The ANGi sensor is globally certified and meets all FCC and CE standards.

How does ANGi compare to ICEdot?

Specialized acquired ICEdot in 2017. ICEdot’s founder, Chris Zenthoefer, leads ANGi and Ride app development.

What other devices offer the same detection and notification capability as ANGi?

At this time, no other device or service on the market offers the same combination of impact and rotational force detection and automated notification.

How does ANGi compare to Garmin's Incident Detection Feature?

Garmin® uses an accelerometer to determine if there's an impact to the bicycle. The regular motion of riding, starting, and stopping can trigger false alarms. Additionally, an impact to a bike that triggers the alarm can happen even when the rider is unharmed.

ANGi is attached to the helmet and is specifically designed to measure linear and rotational forces transmitted to the helmet during an accident. The sensor is specifically looking for crashes that deliver dangerous forces that could result in a rider being unable to seek help themselves. ANGi is designed to get riders help when they need it most.

If the sensor goes off after I’ve crashed, but my helmet shows no signs of damage, is it ok to keep using the helmet?

Even if your sensor doesn’t go off during a crash, you should replace your helmet in the event that it hit something. The EPS foam liner may have been damaged, even if it isn’t visible.

Why didn't ANGi start an incident countdown after I crashed?

ANGi is specifically calibrated to send impact alerts to the Ride app once the impact threshold has been met. This reduces the likelihood of the device reporting false positive impacts and is designed to trigger only during times when you couldn't signal for help on your own. Additionally, in order for ANGi to send impact alerts to the phone, a ride must be in progress on the Ride app to relay the crash.

KNOWN ISSUES

ANGI DISCONNECTS DURING THE RIDE

Many things can cause your ANGi to lose communications with the Ride app, including interference from outside of the system. Even if a connection is disrupted, the sensor will reconnect itself and resume monitoring if possible, but we do present these warnings for your awareness.

If you see repeated warnings, please try the following:

  • Make sure the battery door of your ANGi device is securely closed: start by aligning the two hashmarks, push the door down flush with the base, and turn the door clockwise so that its hashmark is centered on the main housing.
  • Try rebooting your phone.
  • Make sure your ANGi has a working battery. When you shake your device, the LED should flash green at 1 second intervals for 30 seconds. If needed, replace the battery with an Energizer CR2032 battery.
  • Check that your phone’s operating system is up to date and that you have the latest version of the Specialized Ride app.
  • (Android only) Check the battery optimization settings on your phone. In an effort to make phone batteries last longer, some Android device have “battery saving” features that will kill apps when they are in the background. This could explain why your ANGi gets disconnected from your phone. To change battery optimization settings go to Settings on your phone.
  • If you continue to experience ANGi disconnects or other undesired ANGi behavior, replace the battery with an Energizer CR2032.

ANGI BATTERY DIED TOO FAST

Please replace with an Energizer CR2032 battery

  • Driving and flying across long distances drains battery level. If you are traveling, we recommend removing your ANGi battery.
  • Operating temperature range is -20C to 50C/-4F to 122F. Colder temps may cause the battery to drain faster, but should not affect the electronics.

MY SENSOR DOESN'T FLASH GREEN

  • If it's your first time using the ANGi unit, open the battery door and make sure you've removed the battery insulator sticker.
  • Verify that the battery is installed with the writing facing towards you.
  • Ensure that the battery door is properly closed: start by aligning the two hashmarks, push the door down flush with the base, and turn the door clockwise so that its hashmark is centered on the main housing.

ANGI DOESN'T CONNECT TO MY PHONE

  • Make sure your phone's Bluetooth is on. You can check this by going to your phone's settings.
  • Make sure your ANGi has a working battery. When you shake your device, the LED should flash green at 1 second intervals for 30 seconds.
  • Make sure your battery level is at least 30%. Low battery could cause connectivity issues. When battery is low, the LED on ANGi will flash red. If needed, replace the battery with an Energizer CR2032.

WAHOO INTEGRATION

The integration with Wahoo ELEMNT allows you to use ANGi without having to pull out your phone. When you are heading out on a ride, hit start on your ELEMNT as you normally do, shake your ANGi, and ride off knowing ANGi has your back. Your ANGi will communicate with your Wahoo ELEMNT GPS bike computer through the Specialized Ride app.

To connect a Wahoo ELEMNT to the Ride app:

  1. Turn on your Wahoo device and ensure that it has been paired to the Wahoo ELEMNT Companion app.
  2. Open the Ride app, go to the Gear tab, then the Devices sub-tab and tap "Setup Wahoo ELEMNT." Alternatively, tap the "+" and select Wahoo ELEMNT GPS bike computer.
  3. Select your Wahoo from the list of found devices.
  4. Next time you ride, all you’ll need to do to use your ANGi is hit start on your ELEMNT and shake your helmet. No need to take out your phone (as long as the Ride app is running in the background).

Note: After you complete the setup, do not close the app. The app needs to be open in the background of your mobile device for this integration to be seamless. We recommend never fully closing the app.
